P on Copper (with fine Bakelite detail) Art Deco Tea Set, By Joseph Rodgers & Sons, of Sheffield, bearing the 1936 British Registry Date Number 811757. Patent number- 375.213-31. This, in my opinion, is one of the finest pieces of British Art Deco (pre- WWII so the real stuff) I have ever seen! In design, shape, form, and with an exquisite understanding of the modern materials at hand and using them to produce a quality item in construction and aesthetic. The attention to detail reflects the culmination of the British Deco aesthetic while giving a nod to the past Arts and Crafts movement, and with just a hint of the upcoming rocket-age and dark times to come. The pieces themselves are beautifully made by Joseph Rogers & son of Sheffield. Chiefly known for their knives and cutlery, the company has a vast and chequered history in the British Industrial Revolution and Empire. They are made of thick gauge copper beautifully cast and with a fine thick and even E. All pieces have quality hinges and are of the highest quality in their action: smooth, soft and a pleasure to use. The welds are invisible and every line, crease, shoulder and fold is a lesson in precision-setting, mapping and execution of said exemplary craft. The Bakelite is of the finest quality and still retains its deep rich colour and shine, and has aged as well as i have ever seen, with no whitening, cracking or drying, and with barely a chip to the lot. Both handles have a design number (3565952) which is set into an elegant shoulder fitting bearing the corresponding patent number (356592). Both have tight stepped and waisted coffin finials and tight-fitting Bakelite rocket-feet. Of course, you can see all this in the pictures, but this set really is this good in my opinion, and my lengthy description is only a reflection of my passion and pleasure for this piece, its condition, its quality and its look. I have been doing this for a good number of years and plate’Art Deco’ tea sets are, well. An occupational speed bump; every other day, some bad, some good, some used and abused and some downright awful. Usually the condition is poor- it wasn’t silver and was ultimately mass-produced and well-used, as intended. This one has been similarly well-used and much enjoyed- you can see this by the thick tea-staining in the tea pot; but it must have made a good cup of tea, because it had clearly been well looked-after. , because I haven’t been able to. A beautiful thing and a pleasure to own. The condition is excellent. P is all good not overly polished or bearing any unsightly deep scratches or losses and with no base metal showing through, hardly a dent or blemish throughout but its not brand new so allow for some minor defects and inconsistency’s. The Bakelite is also in excellent condition, occasional nibble.. But the quality of the item is why it is still so good… Yes it has been used and the tea pot staining reflects this and i know hot water and bicarbonate of soda.. But no it was used loved and looked after and if you never looked inside you wouldn’t know.. As always please study my extensive phonographs, more on request.
